Are you committed to deep eco-truth telling and sufficient transformative solutions? Then write with us.

Ecological Internet is looking for guest bloggers for our leading environmental portals sites including ClimateArk, Forests.org and EcoEarth.Info; and essayists for our soon to be launched "New Earth Rising" e-zine. Don't bother to reply if like WWF and RAN you think logging ancient forests somehow saves them, if like TreeHugger your focus is upon making over-consumption cool, or if like Grist you think being cuttingly sardonic matters. Help us spread the written word -- the Earth is gravely ill and only profound, revolutionary personal and social action can save us now. Contact us to write for Ecological Internet and share your truth regarding the depth of the global ecological crisis and what must be done to save being.

Climate Ark: The greenhouse effect

3. The Earth has a natural temperature control system. Certain atmospheric gases are critical to this system and are known as greenhouse gases. On average, about one third of the solar radiation that hits the earth is reflected back to space. Of the remainder, some is absorbed by the atmosphere but most is absorbed by the land and oceans. The Earth's surface becomes warm and as a result emits infrared radiation. The greenhouse gases trap the infrared radiation, thus warming the atmosphere. Naturally occurring greenhouse gases include water vapour, carbon dioxide, ozone, methane and nitrous oxide, and together create a natural greenhouse effect. However, human activities are causing greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere to increase. Note: Greenhouse gases are mixed throughout in the atmosphere. For pedagogical reasons they are depicted here as a layer.
