Additional Background
UPDATE November 21, 2011
The protest email to Naomi Klein has been updated.
Rainforest Action Network (RAN) is one of biggest threats to world's rainforests and inhabitants because of their founding and supporting Forest Stewardship Council's (FSC) massive primary forest logging. RAN continues to hold out first time industrial logging of primary and other old forests as a solution to rainforest loss. For example, Rainforest Action Network's campaign negotiations with Disney claim Forest Stewardship Council "certified" paper from first time industrial primary rainforest logging to be "The Right Paper" and encourage its use in Disney's paper supply. Large connected expanses of primary rainforests - and other intact old forests and ecosystems of all types - are required to sustain global ecology, minimize abrupt climate change, and provide for continued local community advancement from standing old forests. Best scientific estimates are that large, natural, fully operational ecosystems across at least half of Earth's surface, water and oceans are required for Earth's biosphere and all species' survival.
Ecological Internet's campaign to get big NGOs (BINGOs) out of the business of supporting primary rainforest and old forest logging has been going on for 3 years. During this time we have raised awareness enormously regarding RANs greenwash and have helped to get other major NGOs to withdraw from the organization. Dr. Glen Barry, the head of the campaign, is a former rainforest award-winner from RAN - and since has become a leading critic of their ecological science-free rainforest campaign. After negotiations with RAN's management broke down, Ecological Internet and tens of thousands of other have protested RAN on half a dozen occasions. Promises have been made and broken by RAN to evaluate their FSC affiliation. RAN continues to hold to the myth that primary rainforests - five hundred year old year old trees in millions of year old ecosystems - should be "sustainably managed" for toilet paper and lawn furniture.
Ecological Internet's earlier alert called upon this year's RAN rainforest awardee - author Naomi Klein - to refuse the award. She chose to instead defend the practices of logging primary forests. FSC's prying open of the Democratic Republic of Congo's rainforests for first time primary forest logging is disaster capitalism at its worse. Let Naomi know there are no "Ethical Primary Forest Timbers". And demand she disavow support for primary forest logging, and that RAN resign from FSC immediately.
